Clergy Evaluation Forms

(Clergy: Please make sure that your PPRC/SPRC Chairpersons receive this memo and the assessment document “Staff-Parish Conversation to Encourage and Strengthen Pastoral Ministry” that will be used by ALL pastors and PPRC Committees this year in the evaluation process. We are emailing this information to ALL clergy and to those PPRC Chairpersons for whom we have email addresses, but it will be the pastor’s responsibility to make sure their PPRC Chairperson receives it for the clergy evaluation process. You can also find this information on the District Website at www.phdumc.org / Resources / Clergy Evaluation Forms. Also, please see the attached “EVALUATION CONVERSATION TIPS:  “Giving and Receiving Feedback” as a helpful resource for feedback.)

March 2018

Dear Pastors and Chairpersons of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee:

This year ALL committees and pastors will be utilizing the attached assessment document: “Staff-Parish Conversations to Encourage and Strengthen Pastoral Ministry” from the Lewis Center for Pastoral Leadership, at Wesley Theological Seminary, for the yearly pastoral assessment.  This resource is designed to assess the pastor’s character, competence, and contributions to the church’s disciple-making mission, and to set goals to strengthen ministry.

Charges who used the “Lewis Pastoral Leadership Inventory (LPLI)”, the “Staff-Parish Conversations to Encourage and Strengthen Pastoral Ministry”, the “A Conversation Guide for Pastors and Staff-Parish Relations Committees in Their First Year”, or the “Staff-Parish Conversations to Encourage and Strengthen Pastoral Ministrylast year, are to use those documents only to review the strengths and challenges identified for the pastor and charge, and the goals set for the pastor and charge.  Was progress made in achieving goals?

Please have notes taken during the conversation, recording responses to each question in Steps 2 and 3.  Set goals that will encourage growth in effective ministry. Write a summary of those conversation notes and goals, and send a copy to the Potomac Highlands District Office, 97 Goldsborough Ave., Romney WV 26757 by May 31st.

Additional Points

  • These assessments will be used by the District Superintendent in the yearly pastoral interview.
  • Completion of the attached Conversation Guide, even for part-time and first year pastors, shall involve the entire PPRC, and others invited by the PPRC to be a part of the conversation, not just the pastor and chairperson.
  • Pastors who are moving must complete the Conversation Guide. It will go with you to your new appointment.  Pastors who are retiring, who may serve a charge in retirement, are to complete the assessment.  It will go with you to a new appointment, too.  Or, while goal setting for the coming year will not be necessary for retiring pastors, the “Staff-Parish Conversations to Encourage and Strengthen Pastoral Ministry” can be helpful in identifying and appreciating the character, competence, and contributions of the retiring pastor.
  • It is anticipated that the LPLI will be used by full-time charges next year.

In Christ’s service,

Scott M. Ferguson, District Superintendent
